About

About Throat Cancer

A diagnosis can bring many questions at once. Let us begin with the basics.
Throat cancer is a general term for cancers that develop in different parts of the throat or voice box. This may include the oropharynx, which contains the tonsils and base of the tongue, the hypopharynx, which is the lower part of the throat, and the larynx, which contains the vocal cords.
Most throat cancers are squamous cell carcinomas. Their symptoms, staging and treatment can differ depending on the exact location and whether the tumour is associated with HPV.
Some cancers cause early symptoms such as persistent hoarseness, while others may be noticed only when swallowing becomes difficult or a lump appears in the neck.
Many throat cancers can be treated successfully, particularly when detected before extensive spread. Treatment is planned to control the cancer while preserving speech, swallowing and breathing whenever possible.

Understanding Throat Cancer Care

Your oncology team may have discussed surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, targeted therapy or immunotherapy. Treatment depends on where the cancer develops, its stage, HPV status where relevant, its effect on speaking, swallowing or breathing, and your overall health.

Rectangle 55

Surgery

May be used to remove the tumour and nearby lymph nodes. Depending on the location and extent, surgery may involve endoscopic techniques, transoral surgery, removal of part of the throat or larynx, neck dissection or reconstructive surgery.

Rectangle 59

Radiation Therapy

May be used as the main treatment for selected early cancers, with chemotherapy for more advanced disease, or after surgery when there is a higher risk of recurrence.

Rectangle 56

Chemotherapy

May be given with radiation, before or after another treatment, or for cancer that has returned or spread.

Targeted Therapy

May be considered for certain head and neck cancers and can be used with radiation or in recurrent or metastatic disease.

Rectangle 56

Immunotherapy

May be considered when certain throat cancers have returned, spread, or cannot be treated with surgery or radiation.

Types of Throat Cancer

The term throat cancer can refer to several different cancers.

  • Oropharyngeal cancer: Begins in the middle part of the throat, including the tonsils, base of the tongue, soft palate and throat walls. Some cases are associated with HPV.
  • Hypopharyngeal cancer: Begins in the lower part of the throat behind and beside the larynx.
  • Laryngeal cancer: Begins in the voice box. It may arise above, within or below the vocal cords.
