What Is a Fibroma?

What Is a Fibroma?

A fibroma is a growth made primarily from fibrous or connective tissue. Fibromas are generally benign, which means they are not cancer. They can develop in different parts of the body, including the skin, mouth, soft tissues and bones. Many fibromas cause few or no symptoms, while others may cause discomfort, pressure or problems because of their size or location. Some related fibrous conditions behave differently. For example, desmoid tumours, also called aggressive fibromatosis, do not spread to distant organs but can grow into nearby tissues. Accurate diagnosis is therefore important when deciding whether a fibrous growth requires monitoring, treatment or specialist management.

Are Fibromas Cancerous?

Fibromas are generally benign and are not considered cancer. However, a lump should not be assumed to be a fibroma based only on how it looks or feels. Different benign and malignant growths can sometimes appear similar, so persistent, enlarging or unexplained masses should be properly evaluated. Your doctor may recommend examination, imaging or, in selected cases, a biopsy depending on the location and characteristics of the growth.

How Are Fibromas Treated?

How Are Fibromas Treated?

There is no single treatment for every fibroma. Treatment depends on factors such as: The type of fibroma Where it is located Its size Whether it is growing Whether it is painful or causing other symptoms Whether it affects movement or nearby structures Whether the diagnosis is certain Your overall health Many fibromas do not require treatment unless they are causing symptoms or other problems.

Monitoring

If a fibroma has been confidently diagnosed, is stable and is not causing significant symptoms, your doctor may recommend observation rather than immediate treatment. Follow-up may be advised if there is any uncertainty about its behaviour or if the growth is located near an important structure.

Surgical Removal

Surgical Removal

Surgery may be considered when a fibroma: Causes persistent pain or discomfort Continues to grow Interferes with movement or normal function Presses on nearby structures Creates significant local problems Needs to be removed to establish or confirm the diagnosis The type of procedure depends on where the fibroma is located. For benign soft-tissue tumours more broadly, surgical removal is an established treatment when intervention is necessary.

Where Cancer Healer Therapy (CAM) Fits Into Your Care

Living with a fibroma may involve monitoring, investigations, surgery or recovery, depending on the type and location of the growth.

Cancer Healer Therapy (CAM) is offered as a herbal-based integrative supportive-care approach alongside the medical plan recommended by your treating specialist.

It is not intended to replace diagnosis or established treatment for the fibroma.

Continue all follow-up appointments, examinations and scans recommended by your doctor. Supportive care, if you choose to use it, should be considered alongside this medical monitoring and not as a substitute for it.

Types of Fibromas and Related Fibrous Growths

The term fibroma can refer to different benign fibrous growths depending on where they develop.

  • Oral fibromas: Fibrous growths inside the mouth, often presenting as a firm lump.
  • Plantar fibroma: A fibrous nodule developing within the plantar fascia on the sole of the foot.
