About Prostate Cancer

A diagnosis can bring many questions at once. Let us begin with the basics.

Prostate cancer develops when abnormal cells grow in the prostate gland, located below the bladder. Most prostate cancers are adenocarcinomas arising from glandular cells. Some prostate cancers grow slowly and may never cause significant harm, while others are more aggressive and can spread to lymph nodes, bones or other organs. Many patients have no symptoms when the cancer is first detected, and it may be identified after a prostate-specific antigen, or PSA, blood test. A raised PSA does not automatically mean cancer. Further assessment may include examination, prostate MRI and biopsy. The biopsy determines the Gleason score and Grade Group, which help guide treatment planning.

Understanding Conventional Prostate Cancer Treatments

Your urologist or oncologist may have discussed surveillance, surgery, radiation, hormone therapy or systemic medicines.

Cancer healer

Active surveillance:

May be recommended for selected low-risk localised cancers. Monitoring can include PSA tests, examinations, MRI and repeat biopsy. Treatment begins if the cancer shows signs of progression.

Cancer healer

Watchful waiting:

Usually involves less intensive monitoring and may be considered when curative treatment is unlikely to improve life expectancy. The focus is on controlling symptoms if they develop.

Cancer healer

Radical prostatectomy:

Removes the prostate and seminal vesicles, with lymph-node removal in selected patients. Possible effects include urinary leakage, erectile dysfunction and fertility changes.

Cancer healer

External radiation

therapy: May be used for localised disease, with hormone therapy for higher-risk cancers, after surgery when recurrence risk is significant, or for metastatic sites.

Cancer healer

Brachytherapy:

Places radioactive material within or close to the prostate and may be suitable for selected localised cancers.

Cancer healer

Hormone therapy:

Androgen deprivation therapy lowers or blocks testosterone-related signals that prostate cancer cells often use to grow.

Cancer healer

Advanced systemic treatment:

May include androgen receptor pathway medicines, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, immunotherapy or radiopharmaceutical treatment depending on stage and biomarkers.

Bone-health management and treatment for urinary obstruction may also form part of care.

How Cancer Healer Therapy (CAM) Supports You

Cancer Healer Therapy (CAM) is supportive integrative care used alongside treatment prescribed by your urologist or oncologist, not instead of it.

The supportive plan may consider appetite, fatigue, sleep, emotional wellbeing, treatment-related discomfort and recovery after surgery or radiation.

Herbal medicines and supplements can interact with hormone therapy, chemotherapy, targeted medicines, immunotherapy, blood thinners and other treatments. Some may also affect liver or kidney function, bleeding risk or hormone pathways.

Support may begin before surgery, radiation, hormone therapy or systemic treatment, with attention to urinary symptoms, nutrition, muscle strength, bone health and current medicines.

Supportive care may focus on fatigue, appetite or weight changes, hot flushes, reduced strength, urinary or bowel symptoms, sexual concerns and treatment-related stress.

The urgency of treatment depends on stage, PSA, Grade Group and risk classification. Supportive care should not delay recommended investigations or treatment.

Cancer Healer Therapy does not replace active surveillance, surgery, radiation, hormone therapy, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, immunotherapy or radiopharmaceutical treatment.

Types of Prostate Cancer

Most prostate cancers are adenocarcinomas arising from glandular cells of the prostate.

  • Acinar adenocarcinoma: The most common type of prostate cancer.
  • Ductal adenocarcinoma: A less common form that can behave more aggressively.
  • Neuroendocrine and small-cell prostate cancer: Rare, aggressive cancers that can behave differently from typical prostate adenocarcinoma.

Other rare prostate cancers can also occur. Identifying the exact tumour type is important because different forms may behave differently and require different treatment approaches. The tumour type is considered alongside the PSA level, Grade Group, stage, imaging findings and other clinical factors when planning appropriate care.
