What is processed meat?
Processed meat is usual meat which has been modified so as to extend its shelf life and change the taste. Modifications are done using methods such as smoking, curing, or adding salt and other preservatives. Processed meat includes sausages, bacon, salami, hot dogs, corned beef, canned meat and meat based sauces.
How it causes cancer?
The chemicals and process which are used in processing the meat causes cancer. For instance, high temperature cooking, such as on barbeque, creates carcinogenic chemicals which cause cancer.
How bad is processed meat?
According to a report of WHO, processed meat falls under the same category where Plutonium lies. However, it does not mean it is equally dangerous. A bacon sandwich, for example, is not as bad as smoking.
The risk of developing colorectal (bowel) cancer in an individual increases with the increase in the consumption of processed meat.
Numbers don’t lie
Estimates suggests that high intake of processed meat leads to 34,000 deaths from cancer every year. Also, the following numbers by Cancer Research UK are jaw dropping.
· 21% of bowel cancers are caused by processed or red meat
· 86% of lung cancers are caused by tobacco
· 19% of all cancers caused by tobacco compared to
· 3% of all cancers ascribed to red or processed meat
So do I stop consuming meat?
Don’t stop consuming meat but if you are consuming it in excess then cut it down.
Dr. Teresa Norat, one of the advisors to the WHO report and from Imperial College London, told BBC News website: "People should limit consumption of red meat and avoid consuming processed meat, but they should also have a diet rich in fibre, from fruit and vegetables and maintain an adequate body weight throughout life and limit the consumption of alcohol and be physically active."
