Basal Cell Carcinoma: Definitely not benign

What is Basal Cell Carcinoma?

Basal Cell Carcinoma, commonly known as Basal Cell Cancer, is a very common type of skin cancer often found in the areas exposed to the sun, like face, ear, neck, lips, and the backs of the hands.  This type of cancer starts from the lowest layer of the epidermis in the basal cells. This cancer may even grow so fast that it can’t be imagined, or it may be possible that grow very slowly.

Is it curable? If yes, what are the treatments?

Basal Cell Cancer is very common and is usually curable, if found and treated early. There are many types of surgeries and therapies that you can opt to get rid of this disease, Moh’s Surgery is fairly popular, but one major drawback that can be listed here is that some people believe that in Moh’s surgery, chances of the malignant cells growing back in the future are greater. Nowadays, Immunotherapy is fast catching up as the most preferred and effective form of cancer therapy in the fight against cancer. In Immunotherapy, drugs that make the healthy cells stronger are given to allow the body to fight against the malignant cells. This makes the immunity stronger so that no outside mechanism is needed. Another major advantage of opting for this therapy is that it protects the body for the lifetime such that it will protect you from such diseases in the future.

Other procedures include excisional surgery, curettage and electro-desiccation, cryosurgery, laser surgery, photodynamic therapy, topical medications and radiations.

What are the causes and risk factors? How can it be prevented?

There are many causes or risk factors that result in basal cancer. Some of them are listed below:

  • Excessive exposure to Ultraviolet Radiation
  • Severe sunburns in the past
  • Pale Skin
  • Previous history of skin cancers in your family
  • Rare exposure to materials like coal tar, pitch, creosote, arsenic compounds, or radium

Consequently, the preventive measures can be noted down as below:

  • Avoid sun during peak hours or seek shade if possible.
  • Wear hat and sunglasses on beaches or places where you are directly exposed to sun rays.
  • Immediately consult a dermatologist if you see a skin lesion or any unusual change on your skin.
  • Avoid tanning beds and sun lamps as they can be dangerous and damage your skin.

Given above, we can say that even if basal cell cancer is often a curable disease, it’s definitely not that easy to get rid of and can be really painful.  Always remember that prevention is better than cure. So try to avoid the risk factors and stay safe!!
