Fibromas (Fibroid)

Fibroids: What every woman should know to become empowered about this disease?

What are Fibroids?

Fibroids aretumors made of smooth muscle cells and fibrous tissuesthat come together to form an abnormal growth or mass-like formation within the uterus during childbearing years. It is a slow-growing tumor and is benign which means it is non-cancerous. However, there is only a 1% chance for it to become cancerous. Hence, early detection and medical intervention become imperative.

These abnormal growths developing in or on a woman’s uterus can sometimes become quite large and cause severe abdominal pain and heavy periods. In most cases, they cause no signs or symptoms at all which is why most women do not know if they have fibroids at all. Mostly occur in women of the age group 30-50.Uterine Fibroids are typically the same but are differentiated based on their location

  1. Submucosal fibroids bulge under the uterine lining and grow into the pelvic cavity.
  2. Intramural fibroids the most common type of fibroids develop within the muscular wall of the uterus.
  3. Sub-serosal fibroids form on the outside of theuterine wall into the pelvis.

What causes Fibroids?

The etiology or cause of fibroids is unknown. However, several factors have been concluded based on research that may influence their formation.

  • Hormones: Fibroids have a love affair with oestrogen and progesterone the hormones produced by the ovaries. These hormones cause the uterine lining to regenerate during each menstrual cycle and may stimulate the growth of fibroids.
  • Family history: Hereditary factors or genetic mutations have been identified, indicating that fibroids may also run in families.
  • Pregnancy increases the production of oestrogen and progesterone in the body resulting in rapid growth and development of fibroids during pregnancy.

What are the symptoms?

  • Heavy and prolonged periods
  • Severe abdominal pain
  • Bleeding between periods and pelvic pain
  • Pain during sexual intercourse
  • Disturbance in urination and frequent urination
  • Pain in the lower back
  • Anaemia due to excessive loss of blood
  • Infertility and reproductive dysfunction

Some quick facts:

  • Women who are nearing menopause are at the greatest risk
  • Women who are obese and have irregular or infrequent menses are more likely to develop fibroids
  • Fibroids can either occur as a single tumor or multiple tumors in the uterus
  • The size varies from a pea to be as large as a melon
  • Fibroids are most commonly diagnosed incidentally during a routine pelvic exam.
  • Fibroids can affect pregnancy when they continue to grow in size as pregnancy advances. Once they become too large, they can degenerate causing pain and uterine contractions.
  • These abnormal tumors do notspread and invade nearby tissues.
