Ways to Quit Drinking Alcohol

The less the alcohol is consumed, the lower is the risk of getting cancer. Be it wine, beer or spirit, no alcohol is good or bad compared to others. Drinking regularly can increase the risk of mouth, throat, breast, bowel and oesophageal cancer. Inside the body, alcohol (ethanol) is converted into a harmful chemical called acetaldehyde.. which according to the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) is a carcinogen (a substance capable of causing cancer). This can damage the DNA beyond the repair.

Apart from cancer, alcohol can also cause liver disease, high blood pressure, strokes, accidents etc. Cutting down on alcohol can help reduce the risk of the above mentioned conditions and it can also help you save money and sleep better. It is recommended that women should have not more than one drink per day and men should not have more than two drinks per day. Not everyone who drinks will get cancer, however according to research drinking alcohol in excess increases the cancer risk.

Below are the few ways to quit drinking alcohol

  • Get committed to quit drinking. Set a date and strictly adhere to it. Make sure that you announce the date to everyone so that it could turn as a challenge for you.
  • Count the benefits of not drinking. Quitting alcohol could improve your relations with everyone, could help you save a lot of money and could make you better mentally and physically.
  • Avoid salty snacks when you are drinking as salt make you thirsty and this can result in more drinking.
  • When you are trying to quit, avoid social gatherings where drinks are served as social gathering could sometimes lead to excessive drinking.
  • Take a break between drinks- every second drink should be a non- alcoholic beverage.
  • Indulge in different types of activities when you feel like drinking as you are less likely to drink out of boredom if you are busy having fun.
  • Don't keep alcoholic drinks in the house as it they might attract you even when you want to quit.
  • Quench your thirst with water or soft drinks because when you are thirsty you risk gulping down alcoholic drinks.
  • Whenever you feel like drinking seek the company of a non drinker from friends and family as they help you stay away from drinks.
  • Increase the intake of apples. They play an important role in controlling the craving and also helps remove toxins from the body.
  • Make sure you have food before you drink. It will reduce alcohol cravings and also make it harder to get drunk.
  • In case you still cannot leave drinking then look for a physician help and whatever medicine or treatment the physician prescribes make sure you follow it in a stringent manner. So cross your heart to cut down or quit alcohol today.
