Ever came across this thought that poor diet can also be one of the biggest reasons for cancer? Studies have shown that around 30% of cancers are caused because of the factors present in the environment and lifestyle factors. Our intake includes various nutrients and chemicals present in the different food. Some of them helps us to protect from cancer while some make us prone.

So, what dietary factors lead to cancer? There are many but majorly they are obesity, alcohol consumption, diet which is low in fibres, lack of fruits and vegetables and high amount of red meat and salt consumption. Let’s elaborate these factors.

  • Alcohol Consumption

Moderate alcohol consumption is linked to heart diseases while drinking too much is related to heart failure, high blood pressure and cancer development risk. Research shows  that drinking alcohol causes mouth, pharynx, larynx, esophagus, liver, colon, rectum and female breast cancer.

  • Obesity

Obese people have increased levels of insulin which may promote the development of certain tumors. Also, fat tissues produces excess amount of hormones which increases the risk of cancer. Overweight people are vulnerable to Esophagus, pancreas, colon, breast(after menopause), kidney, thyroid and gallbladder cancer.

  • Food contaminants

There are different types of contaminants which are present in food that increases the risk of cancer.

For example:

  • Nitrosamines (chemical found in cured food like ham).
  • Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons formed while smoking and barbecuing food.
  • Heterocyclic amines formed during frying and baking meat.
  • Salted food like salted fish.

So, what type of diet is recommended to decrease the risk of cancer causing germs and to maintain a healthy lifestyle? This can be achieved by maintaining a proper healthy diet and adopting adequate changes in your lifestyle.

People who consume alcohol on daily basis should limit their intake to two drinks per day for men and one drink per day for women. People who are at higher risk of cancer development should consult a doctor for their alcohol consumption.

Consume less red meat and include large portions of fresh leafy vegetables and fruits in your diet.

For instance grape fruits, Peanuts, berries, sweet potato, salmon, cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, turmeric to fight against cancer.

So make sure you have a healthy diet. Stay Healthy! Stay Fit!
