What is Lymphoma?
Lymphoma is a type of blood cancer that affects your lymphatic system. Lymphatic system is actually a part of our circulatory system comprising of a network of channels called lymphatic vessels. These vessels are responsible for carrying recycled blood plasma called as lymph. This lymphatic system is held responsible for removing excess fluids from the body and producing immune cells. It contains lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell that fights infection. These are helpful when present in a controlled quantity but when they multiply and collect in your lymph nodes and other tissues; they become lymphoma cancerous cells and may severely damage your immune system.
What are the different types of lymphoma cancer? What are their symptoms?
There are two types of lymphoma cancers, namely:
Hodgkin lymphoma: This type of lymphoma is marked by the presence of a special type of cell called Reed-Sternberg cell (RS-cell). The Hodgkin lymphoma is further classified as classical Hodgkin lymphoma and nodular lymphocyte-predominant Hodgkin lymphoma. The common symptoms of this cancer are as follows:
Painless enlargement of lymph nodes, spleen or other immune tissues
Fever
Weight loss
Fatigue
Sweating at night
Non-Hodgkin lymphoma: Non-Hodgkin lymphomas are mostly B-cell lymphomas that either grow quickly (high-grade) or slowly (low-grade). There are 14 types of such B-cell lymphomas. The others are T-cell lymphomas. The symptoms of this type of lymphoma cancer are:
Painless swelling in the lymph nodes of neck, armpits or groin
Weight loss
Fever
Night Sweats
Coughing, trouble in breathing or chest pain
Abdominal Pain
Fatigue
Itching
What are the possible causes?
Although the exact causes of lymphoma cancer has not been discovered till date; however, factors like old age, Caucasian, presence of auto-immune disease, HIV/AIDS, exposure to pesticides and fat-rich diet, increase the risk of its development.
