Cervical Cancer is a leading cause of cancer deaths in women. Early Screening & Vaccination is a key strategy to decline the number of deaths. Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is a major oncogenic risk factor which causes such type of cancer in women. HPVs are high risk factors that cause warts to appear on different parts of the skin or around genital organs. Young women are more exposed to this virus as compared to older women. Women who have healthy immune systems are less exposed to such type of infections but every year thousands of women are affected by this virus which leads to cancer. There are various types of HPVs, but type 16 & 18 records the most cases of cervical cancer. There are no signs & symptoms in the early stages, but begin to appear in the later stages. Regular screening & Pap smears can detect early signs of cervical cancer. This action plays a vital role in preventing the cause to spread. For some women, both HPV test & Pap test are preferred as a part of the screening. If the tests come out with abnormal results, women should go for a complete evaluation involving colposcopy procedure.
In line with Cervical Cancer Awareness month, following points highlight the importance of screening & what more can be done in order to increase the awareness of the disease amongst women:
