You either rub balm or just ignore the pain in your back. You either give the credit of your lower back pain to the long sitting in office or to the travelling which you undertook. But hold on! Do not take the back pain lightly if it is occurring frequently. Get it checked because it could lead you to the cancer of spinal cord.

Symptoms of Spinal Cancer

·         Feeling of numbness or fatigue in your legs.

·         Excessive pain in the neck.

Causes of Spinal Pain

·         Injuries in the  past that had affected the spinal cord

·         Infection of some kind in the spinal cord

·         Neurofibromatosis 2 and von Hippel-Lindau (Acquired Syndrome from family)

·         Prior history of cancer like lung, breast and prostate.

Types

Vertebral Column – This occurs in the vertebral column of the spine and originates either from the bone of spine or the disc elements of the spine. It has been further classified as primary and metastatic tumors.

·         Intradural-Extramedullary – This type of tumor grows within the spinal canal but outside the nerves of spinal cord. This is again classified into two types of tumor. They are meningiomas and nerve sheath.

·         Intramedullary – It originates from inside the spine or inside the nerves and mostly ascend from the cells that offers physical support to the nervous system.

Consequences

The aforementioned types of spinal cancer can compress both the spinal cord and nerves prmanently. Also, it could lead to a loss of movement or sensation.

Treatment

If it is caught early and treatment starts at an early stage then chances are high that further loss of functions could be prevented and nerve functions could be regained.  Surgical as well as non-surgical options too are available as a part of treating the spinal cancer. Non-surgical includes therapies like chemotherapy, radiotherapy etc. While surgical options vary from complete to partial removal.
