Barbecuing at home or at a picnic spot with your friends or family is a perfect way to celebrate. But before you brush up your edibles with butter or oil, make sure that you fill your plate with healthy and nutritious food.
Go for rich in protein food items
Excessive consumption of hot dogs, hamburgers, pork, red meat, sausage, processed meat, and lamb brings you close to the risk of colorectal cancer. Therefore, it is suggested to go with healthy protein items such as:
· Fish
· Chicken
· Turkey breasts
The aforementioned food items are lower in fat and help to maintain the body weight.
In case of red meat items
If you can’t keep red meat, hamburgers, and hot dogs out of your plate then:
· Go with low-fat meat
· Choose preservative free meat
· Limit red meat to not more than 18 ounce
Avoid exposure to cancer
Too much of barbecue food may cause health complications like cancer. Therefore, it is important to take care of the following points:
· Cook the meat properly with the use of marinade
· Trim the fat before cooking the meat
· Don’t overcook the meat
Replace meat with fruits and vegetables
Rather than consuming meat every day, fill your plate with fruits and vegetables. Along with adding vibrant color to your plate, they provide oodles of anti-oxidants and a plethora of nutrients that are helpful in keeping cancer at bay. Some of these fruits and vegetables are:
· Zucchini
· Watermelon
· Corn
· Mushrooms
· Bell peppers
· Onions
· Tomatoes
Fill your plate with two third plant-based food i.e. fruits, vegetables, and grains.
