What are GMOs?
GMOs (Genetically Modified Organism) or Genetically Modified Food are either plants or animals, which are created by mixing genes of two or more species of plant or animal respectively. Broadly speaking, it is a type of biotechnology that is often conducted in a laboratory.
Why is it done?
It is usually done to enhance certain desired traits. For example, to make plants more resistant to disease, weed and turning hard, and making them survive harsh winter, excessive rain and severe drought. It is also undertaken to improve the nutritional content.
What is the issue?
Many people believe that GMOs bring a person close to the risk of cancer. Though the researches and studies conducted are inconclusive but it is recommended that care should be taken while consuming genetically modified food.
How to take care of its intake?
1) Purchase from the local farmers market: GMOs mostly come from large industrial farms. Thus, go for the local farmers market to get GMO free food.
2) Opt for Organic Foods: Organic Foods are good for health as they are grown from Non-GMO Seeds.
3) Check the Ingredients: Corn and Soy are top most genetically crop. Avoid foods that consist of soy lecithin and corn syrup.
4) Check the Brand: Go with the brand that is labeled as Non-GMO or GMO-free.
Therefore, dietitians often recommend a diet full of fruits, vegetables and grains. They completely outweigh the cancer risk that arises from consuming GMO food.
